chapter six

Meech

Kamara

Sunday, 2:15 pm

My phone buzzes on my nightstand. Rolling over in my bed I reach for the device with my eyes closed. It immediately stops buzzing.

Roman barely let me sleep last night at the cabin. Every forty minutes he woke me up to celebrate our engagement. Then, we got up at the ass crack of dawn to make it back home.

Looking at the time on my phone, I realize that it’s after two in the afternoon. I’ve slept all morning long.

My phone lights up in my hands. My brother’s face flashes across the screen. Climbing out of bed, I glance back at Rome’s body sprawled out on his side of the bed. He’s still fast asleep. Grabbing my robe off the foot of the bed, I slip it on as I leave the room.

I step into the living room before I answer the call.

“Hello.”

“Girl, don’t hello me. I’ve been calling you all morning, Prin.”

Rolling my eyes, I let out a deep breath. “I was sleep, Meech.”

He’s quiet on the other end for a minute. “You’re sleep at two in the afternoon on a Sunday?”

I ignore the accusation in his tone. Meech is six years older than me, but you can’t tell him he isn’t my father. Even before King died, Meech swore he was the one in charge of me.

“What do you want?” I change the subject.

“I need you to meet me at the Bakers St. warehouse.”

His request has me stopping in my tracks on the way to get some coffee. Meech keeps me very separate from his illegal activities. The fact that he has me coming to him at that place tells me something is wrong, or he’s pissed.

“Why?” I ask hesitantly.

“I’ll be here working all day, but we need to talk.”

See, that we need to talk scared me. Did Black and Keem tell him what they saw? And did they put two and two together and tell him that I was there with Rome?

“Can we do this another day. I have a lot going on…”

“Look, either you come to me, or I come to you. Which one do you want?”

Yeah, he definitely knows something. My brother is a man of his word, if I don’t go see him, he will come to me.

“Alright, give me a few hours.”

“You got forty-five minutes,” he says, and the phone goes silent.

“Shit,” I mumble to myself as I look down at the phone in my hand.

“Everything good?”

I startle at the sound of his voice. Clutching a hand to my chest I turn to face Rome. He’s leaning against the door frame of the kitchen. As usual he’s shirtless with his baller shorts sitting low on his hips.

“Yeah, everything is great,” I say slipping my phone into my robe pocket.

He stares at me for a moment without speaking. “Who was that on the phone?”

Rome has this ability to read me like a story. In order to keep him off my trail, I turn away from him and head for my coffee maker.

“It was just Meech.
